As a creative type who has always favored visual learning, I thought about how I wanted to explain my course to students this year and decided an infographic might be the best approach. Enter Canva, one of my all-time favorite educational technology tools. Canva makes graphic design a breeze without expensive software or extensive training. Just create an account, pick your template, and start designing. I like that Canva provides some free templates to help those who might need some assistance getting starting while also providing a blank canvas for those who want to start from scratch. I chose to start from scratch for my "syllabus" of sorts, explaining my course.
I teach one-third of an integrated course called Perspectives of Citizenship to high school freshmen. This course integrates English, social studies, and technology applications. The tech part is mine, and I figured what better way to explain a tech course than with technology like Canva.
I like how simple it is while still explaining how this class fits in with the integrated course, content that will be taught, and expectations for behavior. No lengthy paper handouts to read and go over on the first day, plus students can just save this image to their camera roll for reference later.
What I'm most excited for, though, is to let kids get their hands on Canva to start creating this year!
